Writing this message of the DODL is an assignment so dear to my heart as it gives me an occasion to recall with pride the spectacular growth and development of the DODL of the University of Kalyani.
I am fortunate to have been intimately associated with its administration. Indeed the progress of the University of Kalyani has intrinsically been connected with the growth of the DODL. The DODL provides considerable flexibility in entry qualifications, place, pace & duration of study to learners.
The cherished goal of the nation for universalization of education can be achieved with the help of the distance education. Distance Education or distance learning is flexible educational system which is not limited by time and place restrictions. A learner can progress at his own speed and convenience through self learning and self improvement. For being an economical method of teaching learning as compared to the regular formal system distance mode gains higher access to all sections of society which results recovery of talents which otherwise, is likely to be wasted. Over the years, distance education in various forms - distance learning programs from open universities, online programs and so forth, have helped realized the educational aspirations of students who could not attend full-time and campus-based classes as it is more flexible, personalized and cost-effective as compared to traditional classroom learning, over a regular campus program.
The Government of India's strategy during the 12th plan period (2012- 2017) includes a series of initiatives in the field of higher education with due emphasis to the distance education programme in India & more opportunities for all sections of our society.
In the preceding years of the 20th century and after the beginning of the IT revolution, exercises were started to impart higher education in India, also through distance education programmes that are approved by the Distance Education Bureau (DEB). The long pending dream of imparting secondary and university level education through correspondence courses under the scheme of things of new education policy turned into a reality. This actually was given the name of distance education. Distance education mode has become very popular and common in India, because it is catering to a wide range of aspirants (students), who are willing to upgrade their educational qualifications for various reasons. It is certainly a promising option for those who are matured enough to keep themselves motivated and disciplined and because of their financial condition, career, or location, it is not possible to study through the regular mode.
Our aim is to make the campus of the University, a shining model in its infrastructure, environmental upkeep and intellectual strength. Begun with rationalistic critical thinking, we have been prioritizing Humanism as our core principle. A pageantry of erudite, intellectuals and masterful classroom performers along with robust administrators here we are all set to build a new brave and egalitarian World. At present, the DODL offers five courses at the postgraduate level recognized by the Distance Education Bureau(DEB), UGC and approximately 16,000 thousand students are enrolled in these programmes p.a. It has an excellent network of forty study centers which act as focal contact points for distance learners and provide academic and administrative support services to them with collegiate environment.
I believe every visitor to the campus shall go back with a cheerful memory of having visited the campus with a veritable feeling that our cherished goals are becoming a living reality.
I am sure that the students will get motivated in their studies to develop innovative thinking and to become good leaders in the Society.
